The headstone is probably for a man who was a Union army veteran of the Civil War. You can tell from the style of uniform and cap. If the carving is accurate, the serviceman was a corporal based on the two stripes on the left arm.
I travel a bit in northern New Hampshire – Have you ever made it to the Littleton Diner? Cool joint with fine baked beans and a solid club sandwhich.
BTW – thanks for the great work. I’m a resident of Wheaton, Maryland, and fondly remember the Little Tavern that sat across from Wheaton Plaza.
I made it to the Littleton a couple of years ago. It’s a pretty make of diner, a Sterling. Good food.
If you’re a fan of the Wheaton Little Tavern, you may get a kick out of this plan. I’ll be doing some more Little Tavern posts over the next week or so.
Thanks a ton for the Wheaton Little Tavern plan. I have happy memories of many “odd” nights spent around that joint!
Were you ever lucky enough to visit the Short Stop Diner in Wheaton before it closed years ago? I’ve seen an old photo somewhere on your site. The food was good and the owner sang opera as he whipped up your breakfast (the best gyro omelettes ever).
These days, it’s the Tastee Diner in Bethesda for me – cheeseburgers and gravy fries do the trick!
I never made it to the Short Stop before it became Irene’s Pupusas. We always went to Barnaby’s there across the street. I was sad to see that close.
Here are the shots from when it was the short stop, taken by my dad at some point in the ’80s.
I agree with you on the Tastee. My first choice is the Laurel one (now that they’ve implemented the smoking ban, everything about it’s gotten better) or the Bethesda one.
how you have grown so quickly. hehehe
to giant proportions. =]
It’s all the diner food. 😉
I think that headstone’s one of my favorites. It has a wonderful folk art quality about it.
