Diner Find: Mount Vernon, NY

This was the site of the Silver Empire Lunch Wagon going back into the 1910s. Whatever is there now is surely a replacement, but still of pretty early manufacture going by the dimensions. Despite old renovations obliterating every trace of the diner itself on the exterior, the foundation and stairs, combined with decades of directories showing diners at this site make me fairly confident there’s something lurking under all that stucco.

Located at the southern corner of Mt. Vernon Ave. and S. West Street, Mt. Vernon, New York.

Diner Find- Mt. Vernon, New York

Mike Engle found a mention of a diner at this location in a 1933 newspaper. While greatly remodeled, this monitor roofed former diner is still recognizable. It is located on the Southeast corner of W. 1st street and Vista Place, Mt. Vernon, NY. Further info on the diner is being tracked down.

In 1930, the diner was owned by Joseph Rowall of Poland, who lived at 313 S. 6th Avenue. His roomer and fellow Polish immigrant, John Socker, was counterman in 1930, but would come to own the diner by 1936.

Edit: Found the name. As of 1931, it was the Joe and Larry, diner. By 1937, it dropped the full names and was called the J&L diner. The proper street address is 310 N. 1st St.

eBay Little Tavern model

The current eBay listing, ebay item number 330834889274, is using photos stolen from this site as opposed to actual photos of the Little Tavern model they’re selling. Who knows what you’ll actually get if you bid? I can guarantee you won’t get exactly what’s in those pictures. Buyer beware.

Little Tavern reboot

It’s been over four years since the start of the Jecco era of Little Tavern, and while nearly every post I make about the history of the former hamburger empire gets the same vague comments from that organisation about the reopening and rebirth of the chain, a location has yet to open.

I’ve seen the website, I’ve seen the craigslist ads and facebook comments searching for franchisees, and I’ve seen the ebay store, but I have yet to see any definite and tangible indications that this “rebirth” is any closer than it was four years ago.

Readers will know the passion I have for the history of this organization, and how much I’d like to see it come back. But the longer I wait, the less faith I have that I will ever see the chain successfully rise again. I would love to be proven wrong.

Little Tavern Stools

Today was a big day for my Little Tavern collection. I picked up four new mugs, and eight stools. Three of the mugs are Jackson, one is Shenango. Four of the stools are from Washington No. 9 (1932, 5100 Georgia Ave NW) and four from Washington No. 15 (1936, 1200 Good Hope Rd SE).

Cousin’s Snack Bar – Halifax, Nova Scotia

It’s such a rare and wonderful thing when remodeling is done right. Cousin’s is undergoing some work, modernizing the kitchen and bringing that up to code, but everything up front is being cleaned, restored and fixed, leaving the diner’s charm and vintage appeal thoroughly in-tact.

I’d like to extend a hearty “Thank You” for being the refreshing exception in today’s culture of demolition and to wish Cousin’s Snack Bar the best of luck in the years to come.
